Feeling lonely yet you're not physically alone.

Loneliness can make people feel isolated and disconnected from others. It is a complex psychological state, and can be caused by any aspect of life including life changes, mental health, low self-esteem, and personality traits. Loneliness can also take a toll on our mental and physical health.

People don't always talk about their loneliness, and more often, don't know how to deal with loneliness. Remember that there are many ways to help overcome loneliness and there are people who can help, as long as we are willing to take the first step.

12 ways to combat loneliness

1. Acknowledge feelings of loneliness, as denying it can make it feel even worse, and it falls into the cycle of loneliness

2. Nurture existing relationships and deepen our connections with those around us. Show your appreciation and support for them

3. Schedule time to meet or chat with people, fun activities, gatherings

4. Make new meaningful connections

5. Practice positive self talk

6. Pursue a hobby, invest time in yourself

7. Participate in volunteer work, teams, organizations, clubs etc.

8. Prioritize self care with exercise, diet, sleep

9. Meditation and mindfulness, keep a gratitude journal

10. Get comfortable being in your own company. Solitude can be a good thing. Being able to enjoy being alone is important

11. Therapy

12. Seek help if depressed. Symptoms of loneliness and depression can perpetuate each other. The more lonely you feel, the more depressed you feel, and vice versa. Speak to a mental health professional if you are unsure.
