How to support friends or family with mental illness

Many of us may have a loved one struggling with mental illness, and it can be very heartbreaking to watch them suffer. It is important to provide support to those with mental illness, as it can help immensely with their recovery, and they will always appreciate the support. The condition is different for every person, so there is no golden rule when it comes to support and treatment.

Six important things to know:

1. Understand the mental illness that your loved one is suffering from. Understand the signs and symptoms, knowing the warning signs

2. If your loved one is not aware that he/she is struggling with mental illness, it is important to show your support, express your concerns and encourage them to approach the problem and seeking help. Remind them that seeking help is first step towards recovery.

3. Do not be judgmental of their feelings and emotions, as it is not their fault and they cannot just ‘snap out of it’. Show support and care.

4. Address and remove potential barriers to seeking help for mental illness. This might include finding therapists, support groups, etc

5. Encouraging and helping them with lifestyle changes, including regular and healthy eating, regular exercise, healthy daily routines, adequate and quality sleep, reducing alcohol intake, etc

6. It is important to take care of yourself too, besides taking care of your loved one. It can be very frustrating and stressful for family members and partners, but it is important that you reach out for help as well if you need to. Recognize your role in support and your limitations. Remember to take care of yourself physically and mentally, as this is important for both of you on the road to recovery.
