What To Expect For Therapy

Is this your first time going to therapy?

For some of you, it might be your first time. Congratulations on taking the first step towards self-improvement and wellness! You can learn more about what to expect from therapy in this article.

During Your First Session

You first therapy session is an opportunity for you and your therapist to get to know each other. Your therapist may ask you some questions related to:

  • What challenges are you facing, or what symptoms do you have? When did you start experiencing them?
  • What are the main reasons, or what is driving you to seek help?
  • Some questions regarding your situation, career, relationships and possibly your childhood.

Therapists are good listeners and will make you feel at ease and comfortable. Therapy is an opportunity for you to share your thoughts, feelings and emotions in a safe, private space. It allows you to express feelings that may be sometimes be difficult to express to friends and family.

After Your First Session

For most people, therapy is a gradual process and requires patience and time, so don’t expect an immediate solution to your problem right away after your first session. Don’t give up! It is important to keep attending therapy regularly for optimal results and improvement. Take small steps and improve yourself every day, and it will lead to great results in just a few months. Your therapist will conduct regular assessments and provide feedback through monthly progress reports, which will allow you to see your progress along your journey.

On the other hand, a small proportion of people may already feel better after expressing their feelings in their first counselling session. However, it is just as important to continue therapy, as your therapist will design a thorough plan of therapy and can help you explore further issues to improve your wellbeing in the longer term.

Your therapist will use a variety of methods including psychotherapy, to understand your challenges and help you overcome your difficulties. After your session, your therapist may give you exercises as part of psychotherapy, to complete on your own. It is important to do these psychotherapy exercises, as doing a little bit every day will help immensely in the long run. These exercises will help you understand your own thoughts and feelings more. Remember, therapy is a gradual process!

The Soulgood platform has a Journal where you can write down anything, including your thoughts, emotions, or events that have occurred. You can use this area to complete the exercises that your therapist has prescribed for you. Your journal entries will be shared with your therapist so they can monitor your progress and give you feedback!

Soulgood platform also has a Chatroom (only available for Regular and Comprehensive users) to allow you and your therapist to send text messages, audio messages, images and documents to each other. You can share any thoughts and feelings or events that have occurred in between sessions. This allows continuous therapy anytime, anywhere! This contrasts with traditional therapy in which you will only be communicating with your therapist during face-to-face therapy sessions.

Therapy will help you along your personal growth and transformation, regardless of whether it is related to mood, relationships, career or life in general. Go ahead and reap all the benefits that Soulgood provides! Begin your wellness journey with us.
